Zachary See, a former Virginia resident, is an English literature graduate student at Arcadia University. An avid reader, he enjoyed time working for a Virginia library and is currently teaching English courses at Arcadia University. One of Zachary See’s favorite authors is F. Scott Fitzgerald.
F. Scott Fitzgerald is best known for “The Great Gatsby”, commonly taught to American students, and other works such as “This Side of Paradise”. Despite his fame, however, there are still quite a few facts about the writer many people do not know. Here are just a few examples:
– Despite showing a talent for writing early in his life, Fitzgerald struggled to receive passing grades in grade school and Princeton University.
– Due to his dyslexia, Fitzgerald was known for being a poor speller.
– Fitzgerald rarely stayed in a single place for more than a few years. He never owned a home and would regularly move to different cities in an attempt to find enough quiet to write.
– Many people know that Fitzgerald was a friend of fellow author Ernest Hemingway, but may not know their friendship was frequently complicated. Hemingway frequently insulted Fitzgerald’s wife Zelda and over time the two friends drifted apart.
– When “The Great Gatsby” was released in 1925, it only sold 20,000 copies and was widely considered to be a failure. In World War II 150,000 Armed Service Editions were sent overseas and the book’s popularity grew. The novel now has sales of 500,000 copies each year.
